Strathclyde hosts first UK meeting of European Academy of Forensic Science (EAFS)
Thursday 8th October 2009
The University of Strathclyde recently played host to the first ever UK meeting of the European Academy of Forensic Science (EAFS).
EAFS is held every three years and is one of the largest meetings of its type.
Almost 600 delegates from 40 countries around the world converged on the John Anderson campus for the four day event.
EAFS is the flagship meeting of the European Network of Forensic Science Institutes (ENFSI).
ENFSI was established with the purpose of sharing knowledge, exchanging experiences and establishing best practice in the field of forensic science.
The University of Strathclyde is the only academic institution in the UK to hold membership of ENFSI.
The theme of the meeting was Knowledge Exchange: the Cycle of Knowledge Creation, Transfer and Application.
The meeting was opened by Fergus Ewing MSP, Minister for Community Safety who was followed by Professor Anne Glover, the Chief Scientific Adviser for Scotland, pictured below.

More than 100 presentations, around 300 posters and ten workshops led by subject experts supported this theme in three parallel sessions.
Several presentations (including one keynote) were made by members of the Centre for Forensic Science and 18 posters from the research group in the Centre were also presented.
Feedback from delegates was extremely positive and the Barony Hall as a location for the plenary presentations drew particular comment.
The social program was capped by a ceilidh in Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum which was attended by around 350 delegates who had a memorable and very enjoyable evening.

The organising committee, who consisted of members of the Centre for Forensic Science supported by the Meeting Makers (the conference organising company), originally bid to host the meeting back in 2006. The committee are now looking forward to attending the next meeting in Amsterdam in 2012 - as delegates!
